“CAN’T STAY” track 9 POWER FORWARD
by andrewrtuck August 30, 2023A little slice of life with a uptempo boogie beat. I’d call this “R&B” (& that’s not “Robots & Beauty” as an awful lot of music sounds & looks like to me nowadays. OK old grumpy guitar player rant over).
This one is probably most musically indebted to Curtis Mayfield. Tried to come up with a better title than “Can’t Stay”, but that’s what stuck, so that’s what it’s called.
This has got some rather jazzy chords in it; the only song on the album that is not in the guitar-friendly key of E or A or D. I think it’s in Bb, but I’m not certain of that. Could be C minor, or F, depending on how you look at it.
Lyrically, it’s a gloomy weekday. I get up & get ready & go to work. Wish I could sing better, but every note seems to be flat (Bb- little music joke in there). Frustrated, maybe starting to freak out?! Can’t stay in this shitty little room, can’t do this futility no more. I gotta go! Goodbye… Ha! Nope! Stuck. They got me where they want me. Get home from work, flop down on the couch. This is some loop replaying over & over. This is not life. Wanna play guitar. Nope! Gotta do too much other stuff. Frustrated, maybe starting to freak out?! Can’t stay in this shitty little room, can’t do this futility no more. I gotta go! Goodbye… & then fade out… Hey, maybe I’ll really make it outta here this time?! We shall see. Oscillation. Hope, resignation, hope, resignation, repeat, etc.
Rhythm section is riding high, Vashon Lee Page all up on the Soul Train tracks, Cor Win showing off a little “slappa de bass”.
Tudore’s electric piano playing so cool, with some sort of vibraphone tone happening in the 1st chorus. Do not ignore the congas & bongos & tambourine. Used the green Epiphone with the p90’s, for some rhythmical jangliness, and then overdubbed more acoustic guitar. This was the last track we did at one session, so vocals were feeling pretty good at that point. Backing vocals were a nice surprise at how easy it was to get those on there. Danny is singing more at live shows now, so let’s encourage that! Overall just a tight little song. My brother Marty says this is his favorite. Maybe we’ll get another something like this together for the next album! Meanwhile, we are getting to the home stretch here, 2 more to go, so stay tuned… (Bb).
